<B>ELONGATED MALACHITE STALACTITE</B></I><BR> <I>Star of the Congo Mine, near Lubumbashi, Katanga Copper Zone, Katanga (Shaba), People's Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaïre)</B></I><BR>This specimen is an exceptionally long malachite stalactite, rising from a malachite base as if reaching for the sky. In fact, during its formation it was actually attached to the ceiling of a cave. As time passed, it grew longer and longer as copper carbonate slowly precipitated out of solution, dripped down its slender form and ever so minutely lengthened it. Given the length of this specimen, its growth took a tremendous amount of time. It is very unusual to obtain undamaged stalactites on matrix in good condition because extreme care must be taken by the miners to extract it - a time consuming process at best. And additionally the specimen must survive shipping and cleaning before it is ready for exhibition.
