This work, published posthumously by his friends, was either a fragment or the whole of his long expected great work. The first part, mainly a polemic against popery, includes his plea for the test, and the second part is a treatise on constitutional liberty, displaying a certain amount of historical knowledge and great zeal for the revolution settlement (DNB).ALSO WITH THIS LOT: [WOLLASTON(Wm.)]. The religion of nature delineated. The fifth edition. Printed for James and John Knapton at the Crown in St. Paul's Church-yard, 1731. With a fine engraved portrait frontispiece after Vertue, pages 219, (1, blank), (4), 4to, contemporary unlettered calf : wanting a blank flyleaf and possibly a half-title and the spine worn but the binding strong and otherwise a very good to nice copy. The first edition to bear a portrait. In this issue the index consists of two leaves. Wollaston's only major work, privately printed in 1722, and then published shortly before his death in 1724. It was a major success. It argued for the identification between moral good and evil with what was right and wrong ; truth was the basis of happiness, and truth was to be discovered through the operation of ‘right reason’. He laid out the conventional rules of social life, politics, and private life according to his philosophical system. He enjoyed considerable authority as a moralist throughout the 18C, and his firmly rationalistic account of morality and natural religion continued to be read and appreciated for many decades (ODNB).(2)ENGLISH PRE 1801; HISTORY; ENGLISH LITERATURE; PHILOSOPHY; ; ; ; ; ; ; ;
