In the words of Southey, writing in the `Quarterly Review', "a more interesting book we have never perused"ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) KAEMPFER ( Engelbert ), MD. The History of Japan. Together with a description of the kingdom of Siam. Translated by J. G. Scheuchzer, F.R.S. Glasgow : James MacLehose and Sons, 1906. With 162 illustrations, including a portrait, 16 folding plates and maps, 7 other plates, and many text woodcuts, some full-page, pages lxxxix, (3), 337, (2) : ix, (1), 397 : ix, 386, 3 vols, 8vo, original red cloth : the spines faded and a little worn (with a small puncture to that of vol two) but very strong and otherwise a very good copy. An important and influential history of Japan, first published in two folio volumes in 1727 and not reprinted in full till this present edition. Kaempfer (1651-1715), the first European to visit Japan with the mind and the eye of a scientist and explorer. He was also the first to describe the oilfields of Baku.
