(1820-?) The only son of inventor of the cotton gin, Eli Whitney, which revolutionized the trade, he assumed control of his father's armory in New Haven, producing percussion-cap rifles and later the Whitneyville Colt Revolver with Samuel Colt. Good content A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., New Haven, Jan. 1, 1847, to Hon. Sec. Ahran [?], in part: "...I have...some 1680 U.S. Muskets of second quality, with Fluid Jacks, and every way serviceable...They all were made at my Armory, and are of recent date, some being of the model of 1840 - My object in writing is to ask if the Government will buy them, to use in California, or elsewhere ....". Toned foles with a hole or two thereon, otherwise very good.
