ELECTION RETURN FOR JOHN HANCOCK AND SAMUEL ADAMS
An unusual manuscript D.S., 1p. legal folio, East Sudbury, [Mass.], Apr. 4, 1791, being the election returns for that town electing John Hancock as Governor and Samuel Adams as Lieutenant Governor. The votes were counted "At a Meeting of the Inhabitants of the town of East Sudbury Legally Assembled April 4th 17891 The town being mett [sic] Proceeded to the Choice of a Governor & Lt. Governor And the votes were as Follows For Governor were for His Excellency John Hancock - 31" The vote for Lieutenant Governor was divided with 22 votes for Samuel Adams and four cast for Oliver Prescott. Signed at the bottom by three of the town's selectmen. From 1780 to 1918 both governors and lieutenant governors were elected annually. This time around, both incumbents, Hancock and Adams, were reelected. Usual folds, small loss from seal tear not affecting text, else very good.
