ELEANOR ROOSEVELT
(1884 - 1962) First Lady, wife of Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States. Eleanor was active in a wide range of liberal and humanitarian projects. Fine content T.L.S. 1p. sm. 8vo., New York, June 25, 1951, to Mrs. Eiler in response to a query about her column "My Day". In part: "...In answer to your letter, I am told the biggest minority group is the Negro and in a descending scale there are smaller ones still unassimilated racial groups. The day we do away with all segregation and disabilities there will be no minority groups and that will be a good day for us and the world..." Eleanor Roosevelt's column "My Day" was published from 1935 to 1962. During those years, she wrote six days a week, missing just four days in all those years after FDR's death. Through it, Eleanor was able to write on both social and political issues, historical happenings, and light-hearted commentary that sometimes fell far beyond the purview of typical First Lady daily concerns. Not one to shy from controversial subjects, "My Day" often contained Eleanor's simply-put but biting commentary. Boldly signed and very good, with original envelope bearing a stamped franking signature.
