EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D.
(1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. Fine content T.L.S. on his Columbia University letterhead, 1p. 8vo., New York, Jan. 4, 1950 to John Killick, editor of "Armed Force". In part: "…I appreciate your letter and heart-warming editorial. So far as unification is concerned, I think that each passing day will now see it moving ahead faster toward achievement…". On May 12, 1949, the Soviet blockade of Berlin was lifted, largely due to the efforts of the Berlin Airlift, and two weeks later the Federal Republic of Germany was founded. No doubt these two events prompted Ike's enthusiasm for "reunification", yet the closing of the borders between East and West Germany on May 26, 1952 may have helped push Eisenhower into his run for the presidency. Very good.
