EINSTEIN, ALBERT
237. ALBERT EINSTEIN (1879 - 1955) American physicist whose Theory of Relativity and studies of mass and energy relationships revolutionized the field of physics. Excessively rare, superb content T.L.S. "A. Einstein" on his blind-embossed Princeton letterhead, 1p. 4to., Princeton, June 10, 1939, to Karl Seman of The Jewish People's Institute in Chicago during the early days of World War II. Einstein sends his praises about the organization, and adds characteristically eloquent commentary about the strength and determination of the Jewish people. In full: "...May I offer my sincere congratulations to you on the splendid work you have undertaken on behalf of the refugees during Dedication week. The power of resistance which has enabled the Jewish people to survive for thousands of years has been based to a large extent on traditions of mutual helpfulness. In these years of affliction our readiness to help one another is being put to an especially severe test. May we stand like this test aswell as did our fathers before us. We have no other means of self-defense than our solidarity and our knowledge that the cause for which we are suffering us a momentous and sacred cause. It must be a source of deep gratification to you to be making so important a contribution toward rescuing our persecuted fellow-Jews from their calamitous peril and leading them toward a better future". Einstein identified strongly as a Jew throughout his lifetime, and he defined Judaism as an historical culture rather than merely a dogmatic religious institution. This identification prompted many of his humanitarian works to harmonize relations between races, including his overt support for creating a homeland for the Jews in Palestine after the war, and his help in founding the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Framed with a photograph of Einstein. In very good condition, unexamined out of frame. Along with a T.L.S. to Luen Seman from Mr. Seman's secretary enclosing some articles. Two pieces. $5,000-7,000
