<B>EGYPTIAN HORNED ASP</B></I><BR> <I>Cerastes cerastes</B></I><BR>The unusual bulging eyes of this rare and exotic viper are directed upwards so that it can still see while entirely buried in the sands of the North African desert. The eyes are shaded with odd horn-like scales from which it takes its name as it awaits its prey in the noonday sun. Although not highly toxic, its most celebrated victim was Queen Cleopatra, who had tested the venom on her captives; she determined that the bite of the asp was the best way to die, bringing sleepiness without pain.
