EDWARD VIII
(1894-1972) King of England whose abdication of the throne in order to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson rocked Great Britain and led to his spending the balance of his life in self-imposed exile. Excessively rare T.L.S. as King, 2pp. legal folio, St. James', Apr. 7, 1936 to the President of Peru, Oscar Benavides. Shortly after the passing of Edward's father King George V, Edward announces a new envoy to Peru, Victor Courtenay Walter Forbes, Esq.: "...Feeling confident that the conduct of Mr. Forbes hitherto will have merited Your perfect abbrobation, by his endeavours on all occasions to strengthen and improve the friendship and good understanding so happily subsisting between the two countries...". George V died on Jan. 20, 1936, with Edward ascending to the throne the same day. Already involved with Wallis Simpson at the time of his coronation, Edward abdicated on Dec. 10, 1936, making his reign just 326 days. On official black-bordered letterhead, boldly signed "Edward R.I." at conclusion. Mounting remains to reverse of blank back page, very good.
