EDWARD SHIPPIN (1639-1712). Early Pennsylvania Settler, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Philadelphia (1699) and the second Mayor of Philadelphia (1701-1703). His great-great-grandaughter was Peggy Shippen, the wife of Benedict Arnold.
March 13, 1705/6-Dated, Manuscript Vellum Document Signed, "Edwd. Shippen," Philadelphia, Choice Very Fine or better. This magnificent early document is 1 page, oblong folio, measuring 27” x 16”, being a Property Deed between Shippen and JOHN SNOWDON (who also signs), of Bucks County. In this agreement Shippen sells Snowden a 45 foot-wide lot on Second Street in Philadelphia. It reads, in part: ”... and in length from the Sd Second Street to a thirty foot Street intended to be made by the Side of the Sd Swam or Dock one hundred & Sixty five foot...”. This is an ornate and quite lovely piece, documenting the early development of the city of Philadelphia. Usual folds, minimal tone, with original seal and in overall very nice condition.
