EDWARD P. ALEXANDER: (1835 - 1910) Confederate brigadier general and Chief of Ordnance for the A.N.V., he commanded the massive artillery barrage that preceded Pickett's Charge, and later was severely wounded at Petersburg. Rare war-date E.S. on verso of a letter sent to Lee's Chief of Staff Walter Taylor by Second Lt. E. Meyers of Ramsay's Battery, 1p. 4to., Feb. 22, 1865 requesting that he be granted leave "...to attend the removal of my Negroes, and other property...now threatened by the enemy...". On the verso, Alexander writes "Approved" and signs adding rank "Brig. Gen. & Chf. Arty". Also signed by WALTER H. TAYLOR at bottom. Alexander's endorsement is a tad light with slight show through from writing on verso, Taylor's signature is light but entirely legible. $400-600
