Edward Borein was born in San Leandro, California. At age 17, he left school to work as a saddle maker. He
then worked several years as a cowboy, constantly sketching and occasionally sending his drawings to magazines for
illustration. In 1891, Ed started etching and produced a large number of etchings that were very popular and sold well.
In 1901, Borein toured the Sierras, Carson City and part of Oregon and Idaho. It was during this trip that he began
making watercolors. In 1904, he settled in Oakland where he painted and produced some sculpture. He became a great
illustrator for the great magazines of the day. He became on of the most popular artists in America. In 1921, Borein
settled in Santa Barbara where he lived the rest of his life, continuing his etching and illustrating. He died at the age of
72.
