EDMUND WILLIAM GREACEN (American, 1877-1949) WINTER STREAM
Oil on canvas Housed in a period gilt carved wood frame Signed lower left "Edmund Greacen 1922"? Edmund Greacen had the opportunity to study and collaborate with many of the most important American artists at the turn of the century. This roster would include J.H.Twachtman, Childe Hassam, William Merritt Chase, Robert Henri and Irving Wiles among others. It was however in France (1907-1909), near Monet’s home in Giverny, where his lessons would coalesce and his distinctive Impressionist style would be set. Greacen returned to New York in 1910, and perhaps because of fond memories of the Giverny colony, spent summers in Old Lyme, living at the Florence Griswold House. While Greacen exhibited widely, including at the Paris Salon, the National Academy of Design, and the Corcoran Gallery among others, one of his major accomplishments was the founding of an artist’s cooperative in New York. In 1922 along with John Singer Sargent this endeavor became the iconic Grand Central Art Galleries. SIZE: 26" x 36". Overall: 35-1/2" x 45-3/4" CONDITION: Very good with inpainting 9-92161
