Maillart painted idyllic pastoral scenes and mythologies akin to those of Bouguereau and trained some of the most prominent Nabi artists including Vuillard. Finished compositional studies on paper similar to the present work are extremely rare.

In 1864, Maillart won the coveted Prix de Rome, an award which enabled him to study in Italy during 1865, the date of the present drawing.
