Copper, Two Dubs, 21.21g, 1807, “Value in three languages- Persian, Telugu & Tamil”, Obv: Persian legend “Do fulus Hanarabal Kampani Isvi 1807 (Two Fulus of the Honourable Company, Christian Year 1807)”, Rev: Legend in Telugu “Kampani varuvesana renddu dabbulu” & in Tamil “Kumpini yarapotta irantu dabbu (Honourable Company Two Dubs)” (Prid# 327). Extremely fine, exceedingly rare, Pridmore plate specimen.
Introduced in 1807 following report on the currency of the Northern Circars. Designed by Benjamin Roebuck, Madras Mint master.
Due to high demand & scarcity of Copper coins in districts dependent upon presidency. In April 1807 the Madras Mint master submitted proposal for Copper coinage & minting commenced in that month. Value of new Dub coinage decided as 24 Double Dub is equitant to One Rupee. New Copper Dub coins were introduced for circulation in the Northern division. The scarcity of Copper coins in Presidency was mainly due to the total stoppage of Copper imports formerly made by the Dutch, a large portion of which had been converted into Dubs at the Dutch, French & E.I.C. Mint.
