Copper, 1/2 Copperoon, 6.37g. Uncleaned, very fine, exceedingly rare.
The English mint at Bombay became active in 1672, and struck copper coins weighing around 12-13 gms named ‘Copperoons’. The minting of these coins continued till early 1700s when the design was discarded for a new one with the royal crown depicted on it. Half units of Copperoons are exceedingly rare – while there are no official records of any mintage figures for this denomination, a very few pieces are known to exist so it is apparent that it was struck sporadically, probably in response to exigent demands of low value coins, particularly after the Tin coinage of the mint did not take off as expected. Most likely the coins were struck towards the end of the 17th century, between 1690-1700, as evident from the legends on extant pieces.
