EAST AFRICA PROTECTORATE: Victoria, 1837-1901, AE pice, 1897, KM-1, a well struck example, cleaned, PCGS graded AU details. The East Africa Protectorate was formed in 1895 covering the territories controlled by the Imperial British East Africa Co. (IBEAC) following the 1885 Berlin Conference that divided Africa among the European powers and allocated Uganda and Kenya to Great Britain. The Protectorate replaced Rupees and Annas issued by IBEAC from Mombasa with bronze Pice struck at Bombay using die from London in 1897, 1898 and 1899. 1 Pice was worth ¼ Anna and 1 Anna was 1/16th of a Rupee, therefore 1 Pice was 1/64th of a Rupee.
