EARLY SUMIDA WITH CHILDREN PLAYING
<p>

A beautiful Sumida vase about 100 years old, made into a lamp probably in the 1940's. The glaze on the top third of the vase is classical black, blue and gray over a beige and black ground. There are seven children playing on a hillside and holding hands. All the children have have detailed expressions on their faces, and are clothed in traditional garb in applied and colored porcelain (see photos). Composition is finely done, and condition is excellent. The artist's signature appears on an applied white porcelain plaque at the bottom rear. Height of the vase is approximately 11.5", and overall height with electrical fittings is about 32".


This piece of Sumidagawa ware bears the signature of Ban-ni (see photo), presumed to be a member of the most famous Sumida artist's family, the Ryosai family, on a white porcelain plaque. in 1924, In 1924 the factory was moved to Yokohama, at which time additional colors (e.g., orange) were added to the wares, so this piece was presumably made between 1890 and 1925. The later pieces also have an unglazed background.
