EARLY, JUBAL A.
(1819 - 1894) Confederate major general who fought throughout the war, leading a division at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Spotsylvania, and conducted a threatening raid on Washington. Rare war-date A.E.S. penned at the bottom of a Confederate Soldier's Discharge form, 1p. 4to., "Camp near Gordonsville", July 20, 1862 in which Pvt. William Kincaid, who had been drafted the previous March, is discharged "…by reason of being overt thirty five years of age…" At bottom Early writes: "Approved and granted J. A. Early Brig Genl comd'g Brigade July 2d, 1862". Also signed by Lt. Col.Alfred H. Jackson who a month later would be wounded at Cedar Mountain. Fold splits and lightly-toned thereat, with one such split vertically crossing Early's endorsement, all professionally mended and entirely acceptable.
