EARLY CARVED GUS WILSON, MONHEGAN-STYLE SCOTER DECOY.
EARLY CARVED GUS WILSON, MONHEGAN-STYLE SCOTER DECOY. Gus Wilson was a lighthouse keeper in South Portland, Maine. He spent his days carving seabirds, which he watched in the surf around him. His early style of decoys, known as the Monhegan Island style, is his most appealing and desirable decoys produced by him. This has a slightly turned head and typical Wilson carved eyes with relief wing carving. As is the case with most early Wilson decoys, this has a very old "in use" repaint. Provenance: Original collector's notes indicate that this was bought from Mrs. Grace Chapin of Chatham, Cape Cod, July 1960. SIZE: 18" l. CONDITION: The lower portion of the bill appears to have a professional repair, wonderful style. 9-92384
