[EARLY AMERICAN TREATIES]

21. [EARLY AMERICAN TREATIES]

Two extracts removed from bound publications containing the text of treaties entered into by the fledgling government of the United States, 4½"x8", ca. 1795 and 1796. Excellent historical content. The 1795 publication records Treaties of Peace and Amity between the US and “His Britannic Majesty” including “Commerce and Navigation” signed in print by Chief Justice John Jay as Plenipotentiary and Lord Grenville; also between the US and the Dey of Algiers signed in print by David Humphreys as plenipotentiary; and between the US and the King of Spain with “Limits and Navigation” signed in print by Thomas Pinckney as Minister to Spain, accompanied by Spanish translation. The second extract records “A Treaty, Held at the City of New York, With the Nations, of Tribes of Indians, Denominating Themselves the Seven Nations of Canada” signed in print by the Commissioner, agents and tribal representatives; also a Treaty of Peace and Friendship between President John Adams, Secretary of State Timothy Pickering and the Creek Nation also signed in print by a number of their “Kings, Chiefs and Warriors.” Of particular interest also, this publication also includes 12 proposed Amendments to the Constitution in 1789, ten of which were adopted in 1791, and became known as the Bill of Rights. Both evidence light general toning, and occasional light foxing. Overall in very good condition.
