This is a beautiful pattern to collect. The Tree of Life pattern was made to look like overshot glass of the period. This butter was first made by J. H. Hobbs, Brokunier & CO. of Wheeling, WV circa 1879. The original pattern was made by The Portland Glass Co. but the hand and ball motif was added by Hobbs. Per the book ?Hobbs, Brockunier & Co., Glass - Identification and Value Guide by Neila &Tom Bredehoft ?Hobbs, Brockunier & Co. seems to have acquired four of the molds from the former Portland Glass Co. in Maine, but most of the items made were new designs in the Tree of Life made only by Hobbs, Brockunier & Co. Known molds obtained from Portland were two sizes of comports (including one with a trumpet vase), and a finger bowl. These comports have 'Davis' in the design.? This butter dish is 8-1/2" tall to the top of the frosted hand and ball finial. The bowl is 6" in diameter and the frosted foot is 4" in diameter. You can feel a few rough places on the rim of the lid but there are no chips, flakes or cracks.
