The Portland pattern was originally made by The Portland Glass Co. of Portland, Maine circa 1870. Portland Glass went out of business in the early 1870's. It was later made by The United States Glass Corp. of Pittsburgh, PA., circa 1910 as their US Glass No. 15121. The pattern may have been made by other companies between the 1870's and 1910 since molds did change hands or moved with the mold maker. This covered sugar is 6-1/2" tall to the top of the lid and 3-1/2" without. It is 5" in diameter at the scalloped rim and the bottom foot ring is 3" in diameter. The bottom shows a good deal of wear from use. The glass is very clear and heavy with some bubbles and straw marks. There is a little roughness where the lid sit on the bowl but there are no chips, flakes or cracks. From the looks of the quality of the glass and the use marks, I'm assuming that this sugar came from the Portland factory in the 1870's and not from US Glass.
