This is a beautiful bread plate depicting what many believe is the McCormick Reaper which revolutionized the farming industry circa 1831. The reaper is a horse drawn mechanical machine used for harvesting grain or other small crops. Designed to cut down wheat much more quickly and more efficiently. It was US Patent No. X8277 and the Patent was issued June 21, 1834 to the inventor, Cyrus Hall McCormick. This beautiful plate was issued in the 1870's maybe for the Philadelphia Centennial in 1876 or early 1880's. The plate shows an agricultural scene of a grain field and the new fangled reaper drawn by a team of two lively horses. Two men and a dog are also included with trees and bulidings in distance. The border is said to be either a picket fence or railroad tracks for their importance of getting things to the marketplace. This platter is 1-1/2" deep, 8" wide and 13" long at the two handles. There is a small 1/4" flake on the bottom foot ring and there are also some bubbles and straw marks. There are no other chips, flakes or cracks.
