This antique plate is an important example of Early American glass with historical themes, bearing a white transfer portrait of Admiral George Dewey, the wildly popular conquering hero of the Spanish-American War who was named full Admiral of the Navy in 1899. Produced at that time, this plate is clear glass with double pierced edge of eyelet and heart design closely related to the Sandwich Glass George Washington cup plate. Dewey plate is 5-1/2 inch diameter (photographed on blue paper to show the white transfer). Illustrated as #392 in Lindsay book "American Historical Glass." Perfect condition, a prize for a historical glass collection.
