E. R. Hamilton heavy barrel half stock percussion short rifle, .40 cal., 25” half round/half octagon barrel, brown finish, back action lock, single trigger, patchbox, fancy inlaid wire decoration on stock, inscription plate with name “John K.Gaither” on left side of butt stock, pewter fore end tip; both the top of the barrel and the lock plate are marked “E.R. Hamilton, Bloomington, Ind.”; good action and bore; dark brown patina on metal surfaces, circular patchbox, Rocky Mountain rear sight and bone blade front sight; good wood stock with scattered wear and minor nicks and mars from carry and storage; ramrod missing. This gun came out of an old collection in Northern California and the collector acquired many of hispieces over the years from the Northwest. Interestingly, the Clark County, Washington Historical Museum photo collection has a great image of a fishing camp scene with men around a tent identifying one of the participants as a John K. Gaither with further notation that Gaither was born Jan. 16, 1838 and died Feb. 15, 1918. Although not definitive, further research may prove fruitful as to the previous owner of this short rifle. Est.: $900-$1,800.
