E. Kirby Smith Autograph Letter Signed "E. Kirby Smith." Three pages, 5" x 8", New Orleans, Louisiana, February 24, 1893. The letter was written to Darwin C. Pavey and discusses Smith's admiration for Fitz John Porter. Porter had been the victim of an unjust court martial by rival generals when in reality he had been a model general and soldier. Smith explains this by saying in the letter, "…his friendship for and attachment to McClelland [sic] was his cardinal sin and produced that cruel and unjust finding of the court, which degraded Porter as a Soldier & citizen. The whole country now recognizes his loyalty & devotion to the country and know that his merits & services as a soldier are deserving of the highest commendation…" Smith was himself a general, although it was for the confederate side.

The letter is in very fine condition; usual folds are present. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
