Inscribed by the author in pencil at the head of the first page: "6/5/41 [underlined]/To my old and very critical friend-the chief Communications officer of the Galactic Roamers, with/thanks for his assistance-from Edward E Smith P.h.D." Large quarto (10.8125 x 8.4375 inches). [370] pages (numbered irregularly 1-373). Double-spaced on rectos only. With numerous corrections, additions, and deletions in pencil, colored pencil (red, blue, and green), and ink. Additions typed on the verso of page 178, and written in pencil on the verso of page 369. Pencil note at foot of page 293: "To Battle Creek/May 2, 1941." Some minor edge browning and occasional soiling. Tiny abrasion to upper blank margin of first leaf.<BR><BR>Bound in full gray buckram ruled and lettered in red on front cover and spine. Mounted on the front pastedown is a color illustration of "Skylark Smith," most likely cut from the cover of the Oct. 1939 issue of <I>Astounding Science-Fiction</B></I> (<I>Gray Lensman</B></I> was first published serially in <I>Astounding Science-Fiction, </B></I>October 1939-January 1940). Binding lightly rubbed. Tape residue around the edges of the front pastedown. "M245" written in pencil at upper corner of front free endpaper. Housed in a burgundy cloth slipcase with black leather label on spine decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt.<BR><BR><I>Second Stage Lensmen</B></I> was first published serially in <I>Astounding Science-Fiction</B></I>, 1941-42.
