E.E. Chapella (1879-1951) Cali. Forest Fire c.1911
The lot features an original oil on stretched canvas by Edward Emile Chapella of the California Forest Fire dated October 2, 1911 in an original antique gilt gold wood frame. The painting is signed “E.E.C. Oct. 2 1911” bottom right and bears a brass plaque marked, “Edward Emile Chapella (1879-1951) Los Angeles California Forest Fire October 2, 1911”. Edward Emile Chapella, born in 1879 and later died in 1951, was a Los Angeles, California listed artist. The work is done in oil and shows wonderful detail of a dark raging forest fire across the once, beautiful California landscape with billowing smoke and the sky ranging from blue to the eerie red / pinkish hue forest fires are so known for. Original California artist paintings dated over 100 years ago are rare and collectible with this being a fine example. The frame is an original antique gilt gold wood frame, by itself a nice collectors item. Provenance: From the Henry and Jean Sjaardema Art Collection. The canvas itself measures 16” by 36” and frame is 22 5/8” by 42.5”. The frame is overall well kept, in fair to good condition with some chipping, with one of those being on the right side. The oil painting and canvas are well kept, with most all the paint showing with crisp detail, little to no loss, some expected crazing from age, and a small imperfection or loss at the very bottom edge at the center just below the frame.
