Charlie Dye was a working cowboy on a roundup with Joe Beeler and John Hampton in 1964 when they came up with the idea of the Cowboy Artists of America. Of his own art, Dye said, “I have always tried to paint what I can remember of a life a led before I became dishonest and studied art. My old man could have forgiven me if I had turned out playing piano in a whorehouse, but artists rated one step below pimps in his book.” Dye’s details of cowboy life, like the smoke from the joints of the stovepipe in Beef and Beans, as an example, unite the eye of the artist with the experience of the range.
