Dwight D. Eisenhower autograph letter signed from Africa during WWII with excellent content on a variety of subjects. He writes to his wife Mamie, assuaging her insecurities about his newfound fame. Dated simply 24 July [likely 1944], it reads: ''My sweetheart: Two long letters arrived this morning, one that you wrote on the 8th, the other the 16th. I was greatly amused by your description of Giraud's call - I can imagine the fanfare. In spite of all the publicity you are quite mistaken in saying that I no longer belong to you and Johnny. For the winning of the war it is necessary that there be a certain amount of publicity concerning leaders and armies - but that is part of official life only. I sign many letters - some of it could be classed as 'fan'...So far as I, as a person, am concerned - I'm just 1/3 of the family (yours and John's and mine). So don't fret your head about that phase of the thing. At least no crack-brain has yet started running me for political office. That's something!...And for goodness' sake quit worrying about someone else seeing your letters to me! After all, here in Africa, I'm not an ignored nonentity. It would be quite a brave man that would try to sneak a look at a letter of mine. In my life I've never looked at a letter to another, except upon invitation. Nothing could make me more furious than to have someone try it on me. Everyone around me knows this - so I think you can assume the safety of your letters. My next few days will be packed. I have a number of important visitors...in between the arrivals of hot shots. All in all, quite a grind...I love you heaps - don't forget me! Always your / Ike''. 3pp. letter on ruled stationery measures 8'' x 10.5''. Creasing, else near fine.
