"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Dwight Eisenhower typed letter signed, dated 5 August 1965, with a lengthy autograph postscript added. Letter is addressed to Earl Mazo, a Nixon biographer and former political correspondent for the ''New York Herald Tribune,'' and reads in part, ''PERSONAL / Dear Earl...No greater calamity could befall the United States than for our citizenry, in general, to accept the cloying effects of Federal subsidy until, one day, all of us would wake up to the fact that the government had leaped over and largely ignored the prescribed limits for its authority and, thus practically imposes upon us a centralized control including a fully 'planned' economy, enforced by a 'one party' political system...Unless we do wake up, unless we act determinedly and intelligently in defense of the individual's freedom of action and of the responsibilities and authority of the States, then the future for these necessary elements of our Federalized system is dark indeed. A single system of law would eventually apply to and govern every activity in this greatly diversified nation of ours, with inescapable injustices to some and special advantages to others...Our revered system of self-government will at that time become nothing but a mockery.'' The letter goes on to quote a ''Wall Street Journal'' article regarding the topic and is signed ''D.E.'', with a personal note in Eisenhower's hand, ''P.S. This expresses my feelings but is not for quoting. Should some short quote be desired you might write me again with a specific suggestion. D.'' Letter, on three pages, measures 7.25'' x 10.25''. Includes original envelope with the former President's own postage cancellation stamp. Very good condition.
