Very nice vintage oversized matte-finish 11 x 14 photo, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “For Captain Kay Summersby, W.A.C. With best wishes and warm regard, Dwight D. Eisenhower.” In fine condition, with a few edge and corner creases, light rippling along top edge, scattered light silvering to edges of image, and a stray ink mark to bottom border.

Summersby was a member of the British Mechanized Transport Corps assigned as Ike’s chauffeur, and later as his secretary. Because of her position, the two were constant companions during the war, leading to speculation—later called into historical doubt—that the pair were involved in an extramarital affair. It is believed that Eisenhower presented Summersby with a new photograph of himself each time he received a promotion. If accurate, then Summersby would have received this image sometime after December 20, 1944, when Eisenhower received his fifth star and a promotion to General of the Army, placing him among the nation’s most distinguished military officers. A sharp image with an inscription and sentiment straight out of the history books! Provenance: The Barry Hoffman Collection.
