TLS as president signed “D. E.,” one page, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, December 28, 1956. Letter to Major General Howard McC. Snyder. In part: “Once again, as I review the events of 1956, I realize the strain and responsibility that I unwittingly and unwillingly placed upon you during the year. My words are always totally inadequate to express my appreciation of the daily, round-the-clock, devoted care you take of me, and I shall just have to leave the full realization of the debt I owe to your own, unexcelled, intuition. I am going to try very hard to cause you less anxiety in 1957!” Extremely faint areas of toning, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.

Having recently won re-election, after a harrowing few years laden with health scares, Ike took time here to reflect and send a long-overdue thanks to the man who stood by him. Snyder had served as Eisenhower’s personal physician, traveling with the president on official journeys as well as family vacations. The doctor was at Eisenhower’s side following a 1955 heart attack, as well as following a 1956 operation for an inflamed small intestine—the latter event referred by the president as being among “the strain and responsibility that I unwittingly and unwillingly placed upon you during the year.” Despite some of Eisenhower’s health concerns, the Democrats were unable to make the health of the popular chief executive a campaign issue, with Snyder helping nurse Ike back to health for four more years in office. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
