War-dated TLS, one page, 6 x 8, Allied Force Headquarters letterhead, August 18, 1943. Letter of thanks to Missouri State senator William Baxter Waters. In full: “As Allied Commander-in-Chief, I thank you in behalf of all forces for the prayers offered up in the Missouri State Senate. We have just achieved another great victory, brought about by the solid backing and encouragement of the people at home, and the indomitable spirit of our armies. We humbly go forward to the difficult tasks ahead, and hope that we may prove worthy of ultimate victory.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope (bearing its “passed by examiner” stamp). In fine condition.
Ike’s reference to the Allied “great victory” was their siege on Sicily, which, after a six-week battle, had just been taken from Italian and German control. On August 17, one day before writing this letter, Patton and his 7th Army had arrived in Messina several hours before British Field Marshal Montgomery and his 8th Army. A great victory, indeed, as strategically it opened Mediterranean sea lanes and toppled Mussolini from power, clearing the way for the Allied invasion of Italy. However, Eisenhower’s desire for prayers were well-founded, too. Although the victory was important it was not decisive, with several German military leaders retreating to Italy, where the superior defenses would later slow the Allied advance. Even so, the lessons learned in Sicily, particularly in organizing a multinational airborne, amphibious, and ground combat operation, would be used in the coming invasion of Italy and at D-Day. Rousing content in the wake of a major Allied victory. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
