TLS as president, one page, 6.75 x 8.75, White House letterhead, October 24, 1956. Letter to Idaho Senator Herman Welker, in full: "I know that you are vigorously engaged in a campaign for reelection and that your record in the Senate over the past few years is bound to be an issue. Of course you and I have differed on certain issues in the past three and one half years and I have been informed that these differences are being exploited in this campaign. Unfortunately, little recognition has been given to the many times you have wholeheartedly supported the Administration in advancing key parts of its program. This distortion of your record is a disservice to the people of Idaho, and the purpose of this letter is to set the record straight. I hope that your service to our country is continued in the United States Senate." In fine condition, with light diagonal toning from onetime inclusion in a magnetic photo album. Welker was referred to by colleagues as 'Little Joe from Idaho' on account of his close association with fellow Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy. When Welker failed to win reelection for a second term, McCarthy accused President Eisenhower of not sufficiently supporting Welker's reelection campaign.
