World War II–dated ALS signed “Ike,” two pages, lightly-lined, 8 x 10.75, July 13, [1945]. Letter to his wife, Mamie. In part: “This is my first moment, since returning, to attempt writing a letter. Life has taken on a hectic hue once more. Gen. Marshall is here, John is restless, the desk is piled high with work and I have 3 appointments within the next 40 minutes. So I fear for the coherence and sanity of of this note…On top of everything else, Lee had to come in and hound me for 5 minutes—I find that Lee brought back here the scrap book prepared in Public Relations Div., War Dept. It is so big it will be awkward for anyone to bring home—so unless you especially want it I'll just store it away with a lot of other records until I come home. There promises to be no let up in any schedule for the next 2 weeks. After that I have to fight off a number of invitations to universities and cities. There is a high price to 'fame,' and it costs me a lot to pay it…What a life! Now I go to give a bunch of decorations. So far I have had to forgo my lying down after lunch, but I haven't forgotten it and will start again as soon as I can. The only trouble is my office is hot—but there may be a cool back room around here somewhere. A message this morn indicates [son] John will join his organization in US shortly after Aug 15. He is impatient to get going…Washington seemed hot & gossipy to us. I truly enjoyed my trip to the US. If you'd just once understand how exclusively I love you & long for you then you'd realize how much the week at White Sulphur meant. Please don't forget that I love only you—loyal friends and helpers are not involved in the wonderful feelings I have for you.” In fine condition, with uniform overall toning. It makes sense that Eisenhower was so busy, as the combined command of the Allied Expeditionary Force terminated at midnight, with Eisenhower’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force being dissolved. He spent the day writing letters of thanks to his fellow commanders and SHAEF staff and gave a farewell address honoring those who made the great success of the Allies during World War II possible.
