DS as president, one page, 15 x 11, August 15, 1959. President Eisenhower reappoints General Nathan F. Twining, USAF, “Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.” Signed at the conclusion by Eisenhower and countersigned by Secretary of Defense Neil H. McElroy. Simply framed to an overall size of 17 x 13. Portions of Eisenhower’s signature a shade lighter than the others, and a few light wrinkles, otherwise fine condition. The attractive gold foil seal is crisp and intact.
Nathan Farragut Twining began his military career in June 1916, when he joined the Oregon National Guard as an enlisted man. He received an appointment to West Point through the Oregon National Guard in May 1917, and following his officer’s commission rose through the ranks until Twining, now a four-star general, was nominated by Eisenhower as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Upon his Congressional approval, he was first sworn in on August 15, 1957—becoming the first Air Force officer to serve in that role. He served for slightly more than three years before retiring from active duty on September 30, 1960. This is the highest-ranking appointment outside of a dozen or so Cabinet-level posts that have changed hands!
