TLS signed “DE,” two pages, 7 x 10.25, personal letterhead, January 12, 1962. Typed letter to his older brother Edgar N. Eisenhower, in part: "In a recent conversation with Harry Darby, he brought up the problem of assuring the permanent upkeep of all parts of the Center in Abilene. He pointed out that of course the Library will be properly sustained and maintained by the Federal government, but that we cannot be sure of the future of the house or the Museum, even though he thinks that the Museum will probably remain self-sustaining. He wants to receive the consent of everybody concerned—all four of us brothers to begin with—to put the entire Center under the jurisdiction and care of the head of the library. In other similar Libraries, the Museums are included within the same structure. In our case, the Museum was built first, but as a matter of principle there would seem to be no reason for maintaining the building separately…

At the same time, he wants to organize on a non-profit basis an Eisenhower Center Institute, which would simply be an organization to assist on a voluntary basis in providing some income from time to time for unforeseen needs or for incidental expenses that could not be met otherwise. For example, you will remember that we established a small fund, the income of which is to provide flowers three times a year for our parents' graves. Apparently the idea is that the Institute would take over this responsibility—and, of course, assume others.

In any event, I am sending a much similar letter to Milton and to Earl, I suggest that you send your reply to Milton because of my absence from my regular office. Assuming an assent from all four, the whole matter could be explored with everybody concerned to see whether the thing is not only feasible but completely desirable. I should have been in touch with all of your two or three weeks ago, but I simply got so preoccupied that the matter slipped my mind." In fine condition.
