Dwight D. Eisenhower TLS 1941
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Excellent Dwight D. Eisenhower typed letter signed and additionally initialed ''D.'', dated 7 October 1941 on ''Headquarters Third Army / Office of the Commanding General'' stationery. Letter is addressed to Eisenhower's brother Edgar and Edgar's family and reads in part: ''Thanks a lot, not only for the telegram but for Ed's long letter, the surprise of which was practically overwhelming...It is difficult to keep up with dad's and mother's actual condition, because neither writes any more -- and Roy's letters are not only infrequent, but are about six lines long. So far as I can see, from your letters, both dad and mother are much as they were four months ago, when I was home. We had some real maneuvers in Louisiana. We got through them O.K. and now most of the troops are home again. I came back to San Antonio on October 3. But I have a lot of travelling to do in the next few weeks. Much to Mamie's disgust! The Russians are still hanging on -- I devoutly hope they can continue to do so. Someone has got to help wear out that so and so of a Hitler and his army, and it doesn't look as if the British were accomplishing too much. Thanks again for the congratulations. It was nice to be promoted, but it doesn't seem to make my work any easier.'' Signed ''Ike'' with a note in Eisenhower's hand reading: ''Best regards to the 'Cowboy.' I wrote all this, first, in long hand and then had a typist copy it. He didn't do so badly except on my favorite niece's name -- but I hope she'll forgive the error. D.'' Eisenhower nicely adds the letter ''c'' in his hand to his niece's misspelled name at top. Letter measures 7.25'' x 10.5'' on one page with minor toning throughout. Near fine.
