Dwight D. Eisenhower typed letter signed ''Ike'', dated 4 January 1965, on personal ''DDE'' letterhead, from Palm Desert, California. Written to the President's brother, Edgar Eisenhower, letter reads in part: ''...I am the active -- not the honorary -- chairman of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge...it has as its purpose the alerting of the United States citizenry to the dangers of socialistic trends and of ignoring Communist penetration into a number of our institutions...Incidentally, my son, John, became very interested in this work and, completely without my knowledge, was approached by the administrative officers of the organization and accepted their offer of a position...we believe that trends to socialism and communism will be halted better by positive thinking and by an alert citizenry rather than merely hunting out laboriously the offender who is occasionally hauled before the courts...'' Two page letter, measuring 7'' x 10.25'', has two punched holes at top and two horizontal folds from mailing. Near fine.
