Dvojnice Double-barrel Hand-carved Wood Flute
Included in this lot is a Vintage Dvojnice Double-barrel Hand-carved Wood Flute, circa 1920-1930. The Dvojnice is a twin-tubed flute from the country formerly known as Yugoslavia. It exists in Serbia and Bosnia and Hercegovina. The precise name of the instrument and the number of fingerholes in each pipe varies from region to region. The Dvojnice is a pastoral woodwind instrument common to many countries of the Balkans; a shepherd would play it while following his herd or performing for his friends. This instrument is strongly associated with rural life and the distinctive singing styles of the agrarian peoples living throughout the Balkans. The Dvojnice is a double flute crafted from a single block of wood that has a narrower width at the blowing end but flares out over the length of the instrument to a greater width at its distal end. It has a single mouthpiece, but two channels that direct the air flow into two separate pipes. The Dvojnice face is decorated with varied and intricate incised geometric designs, vertical sides are scrolled from the bottom to just below the mouthpiece. The Dvojnice is in very nice condition, wear from age, normal use and handling. Measures 13.25"L x 2"W.
