The present painting is the delightful work of an artist active in Holland during the late 18th century. The composition depicts two shepherd with their animals at a watering place, located in an idyll of an idealized landscape. The work has been executed in the tradition of the classicist style.
The work has later been inscribed with pencil on the verso side of the stretcher ‘Dhure [...] Zimmermann’. The canvas is slightly torn with small losses of paint upper center. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered areas of retouching. The frame shows traces of age and wear and measures 66.5 x 118 cm. The size of the stretcher is 60 x 111 cm. (cbo)
