This very large framed oil painting by Hendrik Pieter Koekkoek (1843-1890), is an excellent example from the Dutch Romanticism period. It depicts a gentleman tending to his cattle and sheep along a path leading from his thatched-roof home in the woods. Frame measures 60" wide, 49" high and 4" deep. Stretcher measures approximately 50" wide and 39.5" high, and is one of the largest known works by the artist. Frame is very old and likely from the period of the painting, and has undergone full restoration. There are no known repairs to the canvas. The canvas is signed in the lower center.

Additional images gladly forwarded upon request.

Hendrik Pieter was one of a handful of successful painters from the Koekkoek family which spanned four generations from the seventeenth to early twentieth centuries. He was the son of Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek (1807-1868), who along with his brothers, Barend Cornelis (1803-1862), and Hermanus (1815-1882), were trained by their father, Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek (1778-1851). This painting is being sold on behalf of a private client in Holmdel NJ, and may be seen by appointment. Thank you for visiting. Please let us know if you have any questions or comments.
