Naval officer who resigned from the US Navy in 1861 and supervised the construction of two ironclads during the Civil War. LS signed “D. N. Ingraham,” one page, 8.25 x 13.5, November 26, 1858. Letter to naval commander George Minor. In part: “Capt. Harwood…having made a favorable report in relation to IX inch guns…examined by him at the Bellona Foundry, the Bureau has decided to receive said guns for service, and you are authorized to have the requisite Nos. and marks placed upon them…It is deemed desirable and very important that no defects should be found in any of the guns received for service.” Letter is docketed on the reverse in an unknown hand, “Chief of Bureau…ordering rejected guns…to be rec’d.” Some scattered light toning and some light mirroring of ink from folding, otherwise fine condition.
