American writer (1880–1959) who pioneered restaurant ratings and who licensed his name to a number of food products, including a popular line of cake mixes. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Adventures in Good Eating letterhead, July 19, 1950. A request to the manager of Pepperidge Farm. In full: “Will you please ship me four loaves of white bread on July 26, as I will be away from home until that time.” He has added the complimentary postscript, “The best bread in America.” In very good condition, with a few strips of even toning and six pieces of old tape at the edges.
