Dreyfus, Alfred
Dreyfus, Alfred. Autograph Letter Signed "A Dreyfus," 1 page, 6 x 4¼ in., in French (Paris), Thursday, n.d. Dreyfus write to the widow of Emile Zola saying he is sorry that the ceremony for Sunday has been set back to April 12. Dreyfus and his family had delayed their departure for Italy until April 5, precisely to be able to be at her side, but they can't wait any longer…they have to be back when classes start again. They are going to Rome and Naples, looking for a little rest and sun, but she should be assured that in their thoughts and hearts they will be with her on April 12. They are sending her an affectionate memento. Fine. The date "1908" is penciled above the salulation. Emile Zola was born April 2, 1840, so this letter is almost certainly regarding a celebration of his birthday. He died in 1902, before Dreyfus was exonerated from the charge of treason which Zola had brought to the attention of the world. Dreyfus felt eternal gratitude to Zola and remained close to his widow.
