[Dreyfus Affair]
[Dreyfus Affair]. Seven unused European postcards from the time of the Dreyfus Affair, c. 1898-1906. One is a photo of Dreyfus, identified as "Alfred o" Dreyfus; one shows a group of people saluting a figure of a blindfolded Justice ("Justitia"), with small busts below of Dreyfus, Labori (who served as lawyer for Dreyfus and Zola), Picquart (who discovered that Esterhazy was the real traitor and was himself prosecuted in a high-level cover-up attempt), Zola (who wrote the famous "J'accuse" letter which brought worldwide attention to the injustice being done), and Scheurer-Kestner (Vice President of the French Senate and the first politician to express doubt about Dreyfus' guilt). A German postcard is a "Memento of the Zola Trial" and pictures Labori, Dreyfus, Zola, and Esterhazy. A series of four German cards, titled "Affair Zola-Esterhazy / The concealed Lady!" show the treachery taking place; the "lady" is obviously wearing pants, boots and spurs, and a sword. About fine.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.
