Pages 393-633 [240 pages]. <BR><BR>Cloth back and corners over marbled boards, lettered in gilt on the spine. Top edge stained green. Original printed wrappers bound in front and back. A very good, clean copy. <BR><BR>Dred Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom in 1846 because he lived for a time in Rock Island, Illinois and Fort Snellling, Wisconsin (both places where slavery was prohibited) before returning with his owner to Missouri, a slave state. He won the initial case but lost on appeal and then filed suit in federal court. The Supreme Court voted 7-2 against Scott's appeal, and the opinion of the court is the contents of this very important document.
